HOWTO: Upgrade your PSP to Firmware 3.40 OE-A
filed in Tutorials on Apr.28, 2007
In the off chance that YOU brick YOUR PSP during the upgrade process, please do not complain here. I moderate all comments and yours just will not be added.
Sony has released a couple firmware versions since my last posting, but here is a tutorial for getting the OE version of 3.40 running on your PSP. I am going to structure this HOWTO a little bit as a test, if you like this structure, let me know.
*NOTE* You will need atleast 75% battery charge. You may also want to have your PSP plugged into the wall just in case. You will also need a larger memory stick, the 32mb one doesn’t cut it. 1 gig sticks are uber-cheap now.
Step 1:
Download the 3.40 OE-A Firmware, uncompress it, then copy the uncompressed files as follows:
PSP 1.50 Firmware: You will place the uncompressed files in /PSP/GAME
PSP 3.XX OE Firmware: You will place the files in /PSP/GAME150
Step 2:
Goto the game menu and run the 3.40 OE-A Update Maker. This will take a couple of minutes to create the DXAR file.
Step 3:
You will need to access the USB menu on your PSP go into the oeupdmaker directory and copy the newly generated data.dxar file to the 340oeflasher directory.
Step 4:
Once again go back to the game menu and now run the 3.40 OE-A Firmware Install. You will need to agree by pressing X. This will check the integrity of the DXAR file before attempting to flash the firmware to prevent bricking. Once this is complete, press X to turn off your PSP. Turn your PSP back on, and you are now running 3.40 OE-A!
This is the easiest way to upgrade your PSP. I upgraded mine in under 10 minutes following these exact steps.

Hi,
Great to know there is a trustworthy place with great instructions on howto downgrade/upgrade FW 1.5 to 3.40-OE (as of todays date).
I have followed all the instructions from A to B and read the instructions over and over again and everything worked spot on every time. Started with a standard FW 2.71 and now have a great working FW3.40-OE.
For other who haven’t done this earlier. Start from the very beginning and move your way up through the FW’s as it will teach you how not to make any mistakes and give you an understanding of how to flash your PSP. It will help you from not having to ask all these questions. I guess the crucial (but not def.) FW change is going to be the FW 1.5. This doesn’t mean that you are out of the clear once this has been done, but its the greates test of them all.
Start with the devhook FW simulator and move on from there.
Cheers

fauzi no you can’t because you have official firmware and this isn’t official. you need firmware version 1.50 or 3.XX OE, XX’s meaning any number. on your firmware sony will not allow you too run the file needed to update. it will just show up as corrupted data. also you cannot downgrade at the moment you will have to wait for a downgrader.
oh thanks jason for confirming whether or not i had to downgrade from 3.10 OE-A’ to 1.50. now i’m on 3.40 OE what is different?

I suggest that the original HOWTO be replaced by this one, since it’s much easier.

You must downgrade so that you can actually run the upgrader.
But what I wonder about is:how do you upgrade from an official firmware to another official one? It won’t run the upgrader, will it?

Thx soooooooooooooooooooo much, it worked!!!!!!!!!!

Hey, the update works perfectly until I get to the point where the 3.40 update firmware installer has to read the data.dxar file that either the file does not exist, or that it can not read it. Someone help please because I have not only downloaded the 1.5 and the 3.40 updates and then renamed them appropriately, but after that, I just ran the 3.40 Update maker with the 2 files, the 1.5 and 3.40 that were in the compressed 3.40 oe-a file, but neither of them produced a good data.dxar. I even went as far as to copy the data.dxar into different the different files and see if the 3.40 install would read them, but it didn’t. Currently I have a 1.5 that I downgraded from a 2.71 TA-82. Someone, please tell me what I have been doing wrong please.
Thank you.
